LOCAL INFORMATION/PLACES TO VISIT FROM CASA IANDA
Casa Ianda is the ideal base for touring fascinating Andalucia. We can provide maps and guide books in several languages to help you plan your itinerary.
Lake Viñuela is set in the stunning Axarquia region of Malaga province; towering above the lake is the 2066 meter high Mount Maroma - the highest mountain in Malaga Province. As well as unspoiled spectacular scenery the area is rich with birds, animals and wild flowers so this is a paradise for nature lovers and photographers. The area is mainly agricultural with crops including Avocado, Cereals, Grapes, Olives and Almonds.
Despite looking as though it has been here forever Lake Viñuela is actually a man-made reservoir; prior to its construction archaeologists found many remains of Neolithic and Roman settlements. As the lake provides water for the Malaga area only non-motorized craft are allowed to sail on the water so there are no noisy boats or jet-skis to spoil the tranquility of this beautiful area. Surrounded by Pine trees the lake has a couple of picnic areas with barbeque facilities. The lake was formed by the daming of the River Guara that is a tributary of the River Velez; at full capacity the reservoir can hold up to 170 million cubic metres of water. A new Water Sports Club offers Sailing, Rowing, Canoeing and Windsurfing on the lake.
The lake takes its name from the nearby village of La Viñuela that is itself named after its Vines that still produce a tasty sweet wine.
The local Olive Oil is known throughout the region for its quality; people wanting to buy this are spoiled for choice as Los Romanes, Puente Don Manuel, Periana and Mondron all produce excellent quality oils.
Food wise, local dishes are mainly meat and game based - Rabbit, Wild Boar and Kid are local specialities available in most restaurants. Fish dishes are also available - much of the fish coming from from the local fleet at Caleta de Velez 15 kilometers away. Salads are popular often containing locally grown Avocado - try the famous Malaga Salad with Orange and Cod. Cold soups such as the Tomato based Gazpacho (known as a ´liquid salad´!) and Ajoblanco (with Garlic and Almonds) are refreshing on hot Summer days. Local Honey is excellent and well respected throughout Andalucia. Many local bars have a good choice of Tapas - try washing these down with a glass of the locally produced sweet wine or with Malaga Wine that is similar to Sherry.
For a change of scenery, the coast and beaches of the less developed eastern Costa del Sol are less than 20 minutes drive from the lake with two motorways a similar distance away giving day trip access to all the ´must see´ sights of Andalucia - see the list of approximate driving times below.
Come and see for yourself why this amazing area attracts artists and travellers from around the world - and why so many of them come back again and again!

HOW TO GET TO CASA IANDA FROM MALAGA AIRPORT
CASA IANDA GPS COORDINATES ARE 36.86139 NORTH 4.17203 WEST
On leaving the airport follow signs for Malaga Centre - left hand lane as you climb out of the Airport grounds. Continue towards Malaga for 5-7 minutes until you see signs for the E15/A7 Motorway - direction Granada/Motril/Almeria - on your right. Get on to the E15/A7 and travel east for 25-30 minutes until you reach Exit 272 (Salida 272 - Velez Malaga/Torre del Mar). Come off here and go right round the roundabout onto the A356 - direction Colmenar/Alhama de Granada. It is now a straight run of about 15 minutes until you see the lake on your right. Continue over the dam and take the first turning on your left to LOS ROMANES; this is a funny little turning where you have to go right to turn left. After just 400 METERS/2 MINUTES drive you will see the first development of houses up on the hillside on your left with a large sign for EL MIRADOR DEL EMBALSE; turn left up here and our house is the 4th villa - No. 5, Casa Ianda. Journey time approximately 50 minutes.
